The Canary Cottage is the only Bed and Breakfast in the historic town of Clifton, Virginia. Situated in the heart of the town, it was originally built in 1884 as a General Mercantile Store and local gathering place. Its rich history also includes occupancy as a Saloon, a Bakery, a Grocery, a Pool Hall, a Cabinet Shop, and a Church. An addition was built in 1926, which served as a Barber Shop. In 1965, the building was purchased and completely restored into a residence. A two-story addition was added to the back of the house. This addition includes a family room with walls of wood from a 200 year-old Tennessee barn and 3 bedrooms + 2 1/2 baths. Also, you won't want to miss the beautiful stained glass doors leading into the front living room. They are original doors from the Clifton Inn (now the Hermitage Inn restaurant.)

The location and history attracted the current owner, Lynne Garvey Hodge, who saw the vision for a Bed and Breakfast in the area. She moved in just before Christmas 1999 and then spent almost a year renovating and redecorating. The cottage has been entirely repainted, inside and out, in warm colors of peach, yellow, and blue. The kitchen was completely remodeled to add a picture window on the north wall, new appliances, cabinets, fixtures, and countertops. Retaining the original natural brick flooring and industrial-sized refrigerator enhanced the gourmet feel. The custom window treatments, antiques, and personal artwork throughout the cottage complete the comfortable, friendly ambiance. After much hard work, the home is ready to share.

The Canary Cottage offers a dramatically tasteful haven for romantic getaways, honeymoons, or business travel.
